Summary

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY MUSUEM CURATOR with the Collection Management Section, Curator Branch, Collection Management Division of the Naval History and Heritage Command, Collections Management Facility which is located at the Defense Supply Center in Richmond, VA. The Curator Branch is responsible for the management of Navy properties of historical and inspirational value.

Duties

Help
  • You will supervise the Curator Branch staff assigning tasks, ensuring training compliance, conducting training, establishing yearly objectives, and conducting performance reviews.
  • You will manage the day-to-day operations of the 300,000 square foot Collections Management Facility
  • You will serve as leading curator for backlog elimination and baseline inventory projects
  • You will perform project and budget planning and execution
  • You will ensure accountability of artifacts under your purview
  • You will coordinate issues with the Curator Branch Head and Deputy Branch Head
  • You will answer technical and general inquires on the historical properties in the collection
  • You will conduct independent research and extensive research on aspects of the collection
  • You will prepare or assist in preparing presentation materials including for online and social media use

Qualifications

There is a Basic Requirement to hold a GS-1015 position in the Federal government. See the "Education" section of this announcement for details.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Museum Curator. Specialized experience must demonstrate performing duties such as the following:
Demonstrating a high degree of knowledge in collection management by managing or assisting in managing the daily operations of museum collections such as the preparation of work statements, preservation methods, and collections storage spaces; Developing and implementing plans of action to eliminate artifact backlog and establishing a baseline inventory of the artifact collection; Ensuring accountability of artifacts under your purview; Conducting independent research and/or extensive research on aspects of museum collections; Communicating orally and in writing on subjects related to museum curation, management, or artifacts; assisting in preparing presentation materials; using automated collections data management systems; using knowledge of American and World History to provide contextual understanding of artifacts and/or collections; Supervising personnel in a museum setting including approving performance appraisals, giving direction to staff, and performing other supervisory duties.

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements and Specialized Experience you must also meet the the Selective Placement Factor which is: Having supervisory experience in a museum setting AND demonstrated experience with museum collection management practices and processes?
Examples of such experience include:
Serving as a supervisor in a museum setting, approving performance appraisals, giving direction to staff, and performing other supervisory duties.

Serving as a collection manager or relevant associated position of the museum profession in a museum or working in a museum collection that is similar in scope to the Curator Branch collection. See the following links for information on the Curator Branch;

Have successfully completed a bachelor degree in museum work or in an applicable subject-matter field.
