Duties

Help
  • Monitor and evaluate the horse training program, outlines training requirements, and training schedules with the Herd Manager for specific horses.
  • Develops and creates lesson plans, operational exercises, and other training materials through the analysis of problems or behavior.
  • Create training materials for training, maneuvers, and proficiency programs.
  • Perform horse training duties: conditioning of horses; response training of horses; ground control; lateral movement; lead changes; components of stop; communication through the reins; use of round pen; horse psychology; and ceremonial riding.
  • Teach Soldiers on various horse care topics including horsemanship, grooming, tacking, horse behavior, stable management, horse health, care of ceremonial horses, riding safety, and how to get the best behavior out of their horses.
  • Provide management and oversight of the United States Army's only equine herd management program.
  • Develops lesson plans, operational exercises, and other training materials through the analysis of problems or behavior.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment physical and periodic physical as directed thereafter. Employee may be required to stand for several hours duration and lift up to 80 pounds.
  • May be required to work overtime, comp time, weekends, holidays, or on-call duty hours.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) travel may be required approximately 10% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes equine and natural horse training techniques and instruction covering a wide range of instructional methods; the ability to train horses to drive; management of an equine and herd training and riding program; equine horse care including at events and ceremonies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-12).

Education
