Duties

Help

  • Performs selected tasks and phases of routine studies and projects that require application of basic occupational field theory and principles in the technical area of Engineering.
  • Participates with senior personnel in conducting non-routine projects.
  • Provides assistance in planning, monitoring, and conducting special studies, projects, and initiatives.
  • Uses computer/computer software such as information management programs, computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs, and project tracking programs to assist senior personnel in solving engineering problems.

  • Must have a good academic standing (no less than 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for bachelor's programs and 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for master's program)
  • This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Student Trainee Positions. Failure to submit transcripts, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university will result in an ineligible rating.

Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-03
: Completion of 30 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.)

Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-04: Completion of 60 semester hours or more of post-high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.)

Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-05: Completion of 120 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.) **For completed undergraduate programs or equivalent during Spring/Summer 2023, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university for Fall 2023 must be provided**

REQUIRED AREA OF STUDY: Seeking a professional engineering degree. The curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Knowledge of basic occupational theory, principles concepts, and practices in the technical area of engineering.
  2. Skill in applying basic occupational theory, principles, concepts, and practices sufficient to perform student trainee assignments.
  3. Ability to follow instructions and guidance to complete assigned tasks and communicate information to other in oral or written format.
  4. Ability to analyze problems, identify significant factors, gather and interpret pertinent data, and apply established rules and procedures in order to recommend effective solutions.
  5. Ability to learn and apply basic investigative techniques to accomplish work in the subject-matter field.
  6. Ability to gather and analyze basic facts, information, data, and draw conclusions.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

This is your opportunity to begin a successful Federal civilian career with the United States Air Force. As an Intern, you will be given the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to pursue a successful career with the US Air Force.

This internship is to provide a learning opportunity for a student enrolled in a field of study relating to their career path, to enhance their future goals and improve their knowledge with work experience in a working environment.

The entire period served under the Internship Program counts as the participant's trial period.

Interns may work part-time or full-time schedules

Interns may be considered for noncompetitive conversion to a term or permanent appointment within 120 days of completion of degree requirements, IF they:

  • Are a U.S. citizen
  • Successfully complete an academic course of study with a GPA of at least 3.0 for undergraduates in engineering and 3.0 for graduates
  • Complete a minimum of 640 hours of work experience under the Internship Program
  • Meet the OPM Qualification requirements for the position the intern may be converted to
  • Maintain acceptable performance
It is important to remember that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee the agency will offer conversion. NOTE: U.S. citizenship is required for a noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term appointment with the Department of the Air Force.
