Duties

Help
  • Serve as a lead senior research scientist and principal investigator in the Air Force Medical Services premier healthcare, medical education and research, and readiness wing in the Defense Health Agency San Antonio Market.
  • Plans, directs, and oversees the implementation of the conduct of an independent and original clinical and translational research in the areas of trauma, resuscitation, stabilization, and clinical and rehabilitation medical research.
  • Provides scientific leadership, technical problem-solving, and programmatic guidance to investigators and senior staff, commanders, program directors, research cell staff to manage and implementation a research program that meets regulatory
  • Research compliance, cost, schedule and performance parameters to address joint medical and AFMS unique capability gaps.
  • Responsible for resolving major issues through personal contact or formal meetings with clinical investigators and research teams, program directors, functional managers, staff action officers.
  • The incumbent is responsible for wing research roadmap and overall program objectives, objectives, priorities, and funding, the employee is responsible for planning and organizing work.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access. A pre-employment and recurring comprehensive background investigations are required.
  • Employee must file an OGE 450 Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, upon appointment and by 31 Dec annually, thereafter, in accordance with DODD 5500.7
  • May be required to work other than normal duty hours (e.g., evenings or weekend)
  • Work performance may require travel away from normal duty station by aircraft.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 125 pounds with assistance is required.

Basic Requirement for General Health Science Officer:

Degree: Bachelors or graduate (or higher level) degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (MUST submit a copy of your transcript with your application package or you will be rated ineligible)

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes principles and techniques to engage in scientific investigations to study physiological responses to trauma, burns, sepsis and surgery, underlying mechanisms of local and systemic reactions, establishment and maintenance of homeostasis and wound healing, clinical and rehabilitative care and plan, organize, and direct the functions of an organization, and mentor, motivate, supervise and appraise the staff as well as analyze, plan, and adjust work operations to meet program mission requirements and objectives within available resources. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-14).

A Doctorate of philosophy or medical degree with research experience in trauma and/or clinical care is highly desired.
