Duties

Help
  • Operates a variety of heavy construction equipment including diesel road grader, case front end loader with attachments), backhoes and trenchers; grades road shoulders and gravel, roads, and clears snow from parking lots.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs to vehicles and equipment, i.e., tractors, forklifts, trucks, automobiles, buses, wagons, spreaders, end loaders, skid loaders, snow blowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, farm equipment, Iawn mowers, etc.
  • Checks spark plugs, fan belts, tail pipes, hoses and similar items; makes replacements and adjustments.
  • Uses a computer to log deliveries, check e-mail communications, and provide computer generated reports as requested.
  • Replaces accessories such as rear-view mirrors; rotates, replaces, and repairs tube and tubeless tires with a plugger or a hot or cold patch.
  • Assigns work, sets the pace of the work, provides technical guidance, demonstrates proper work methods, ensures safety rules are followed, checks work in progress and upon completion, and reports work status and delays to the supervisor.

  • This is an Essential Employee Position that must report during times of emergency or inclement weather.
  • May also be subjected to call-back situations or to working weekends, evenings, holidays, or after hours when necessary during emergencies, critical periods, or during times when the government is closed due to inclement weather.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Time in grade: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

Qualifications will be determined under the Job Element Rating System X-118C, Qualifications Standard Handbook. While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator Leader, without more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Work Environment:
Work is performed in all types of weather and on different types of terrain includes exposure to injury noise, vibration, dust, dirt and fumes from motors and exhaust, cuts, and bruises, etc. Safety requirements must be observed. Must wear protective clothing and gear for the application of pesticides; use a full-face respirator when working in biological control settings; and conform with facial hair restrictions that may be required to comply with proper operator of personal protective equipment

Physical Effort:
The operation of heavy equipment requires hard physical work. Considerable strain is caused by the constant motion of this machinery. The work requires constant bending, turning, and reaching; lifting and moving of gas cylinders, active walking, standing, bending, reaching etc.; handling objects that weigh over 50 points; displaying good eye, hand and arm coordination; and functioning in awkward or strained positions.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
