Summary

The Digital Editorial Director will develop journalistic storytelling for the nga.gov website based on audience data and strategic content priorities for collections, exhibitions, and programs. This role is designed to be highly collaborative, and the person selected for it will work closely with internal content producers while building a national network of contributors. Duties

Help

As the Digital Editorial Director, you will:

  • Lead content development for journalistic storytelling on the nga.gov website.
  • Direct editorial coverage and assignments for staff and freelance writers; spot and create opportunities to commission original writing and reporting.
  • Build a national network of external writers, editors, and content producers who can tell stories about art, creativity, and our shared humanity.
  • Provide editorial direction, working with writers to scope and develop their work; mentor editors and coordinate their assignments.
  • Research, write, and edit original content to ensure it is accurate, timely, engaging, accessible, and strategic for the National Gallery’s brand and reputation.
  • Ensure that complex art-related topics are communicated clearly, in a manner that is engaging and accessible to a general readership.
  • Oversee the preparation of content for publication, including managing editors in their work, reading and (when necessary) doing additional text editing or writing display copy, giving feedback on image selection and headline development, and partnering on developing timelines.
  • Maintain editorial style guide, brand voice, and journalistic best practices.
  • Collaborate with other teams, including curatorial subject matter experts, program leaders, and content collaborators in the digital experience, communications, and other departments to identify opportunities.
  • Direct editorial content strategy for attracting and building a national audience, working in collaboration with the digital experience and communications teams; be accountable for growing the number of readers and extending national reach and engagement in measurable ways.
  • Establish the editorial identity of the National Gallery’s brand. Create core topic areas. Diversify the stories we tell.
  • In collaboration with others, deeply understand the impact of editorial strategies, activities, and processes on the National Gallery’s goals and objectives. Use this information to drive a continuous cycle of improvement in editorial content throughout the National Gallery.
  • Build internal partnerships and processes among the Content Strategy, Brand Creative, Communications, and Digital Experience teams to develop editorial approaches, integrate content projects, and create communications and promotional plans and schedules.
  • Guide a variety of stakeholders and contributors that might include curatorial subject matter experts, program leaders, and content partners in the digital experience, communications, education, and other departments to identify opportunities to broaden, deepen, and grow national audience engagement.
  • Establish editorial calendars; ensure that contributors and partners are meeting their deadlines and fulfilling expectations for quality and quantity.
  • Optimize editorial workflows to provide capacity for proactive opportunities and timely responses to incoming content requests.
  • Oversee the contract management and deliverables of external freelance writers, photographers, editors, and designers.
  • Oversee budgets for complex projects.
  • Perform the full range of supervisory responsibilities. Mentor less seasoned professionals.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-301-14. A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service. For this position, specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-13 level in the Federal service, leading story development and execution on digital content platforms.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.

  1. Mastery knowledge of and experience in developing, commissioning, writing, editing, and publishing journalism-style storytelling content for digital platforms.
  2. Mastery knowledge of and demonstrated experience in digital content development concepts, practices, standards, and technologies.
  3. Knowledge of English usage, grammar, and style; familiarity with and ability to follow digital style guides; and ability to implement in-house style guidelines.
  4. Mastery knowledge of and skill in applying analytical and evaluative techniques for synthesizing complex material from multiple sources into coherent, journalistic text sufficient for providing editorial direction, leading story content development, and writing for the National Gallery’s journalism-style storytelling initiatives and for evaluating their effectiveness in engaging target audiences.
  5. Ability to engage with and guide senior thought leaders in the fields of art, history, and the humanities in writing and editing for digital publication.
  6. Mastery knowledge of and skill in applying program management concepts and procedures sufficient to oversee the contract management and deliverables of external freelance writers, photographers, editors, and designers; oversee project budgets; and optimize editorial workflows.
  7. Familiarity with art and art history.
  8. Knowledge in supervision of staff.
  9. Leadership of cross-functional project teams with a focus on editorial direction, story development, and content development for digital media production.
