As a/an Senior Underwriter, you will:

  • Serve as an expert-level resource within his/her Office on matters relating to Underwriting and other Direct Endorsement issues. Often, the incumbent's expertise is reflected in that he/she may be expected to serve as a trouble-shooter/Team Leader on Underwriting issues arising within the incumbent's Office.
  • Be responsible for analyzing the risk inherent in the issuance of mortgage insurance on mortgages for one-to-four family loans to determine if a property is an acceptable risk, and to determine the credit eligibility of the mortgagors and to assure compliance with statutory, regulatory and administrative requirements, the key area of this responsibility is in evaluating the operation(s) of the Direct Endorsement and/or contractor performed underwriting program(s). This review is to determine problems with specific underwriters, appraisers, builders, or lenders so action can be taken to correct, or minimize the losses associated with the identified problems.
  • Determine the consistency of the conclusions by comparison with other conclusions reported in similar cases recently processed including amendment of any item if warranted.
  • Serve as Government Technical Monitor (GTM) ensuring that requirements of contracts, servicing the Center's functions, are being met. The underwriter makes recommendations concerning that work performance to the Government Technical Representative (GTR) and provides written documentation of any discrepancies. The Senior Underwriter is responsible for making recommendations for statements of work including any modifications.

This is a 100% telework position, within the jurisdiction of HUD's Santa Ana, CA HOC office, within the locations of Anchorage, Alaska, Boise, Idaho, Guam, Guam, Honolulu, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Nevada, Phoenix, Arizona, Portland, Oregon, Santa Ana, California, and Seattle, Washington.

Key Requirements:

  • Must be U.S. Citizen or U.S. National.
  • A one year probationary period may be required.

  • Public Trust - Background Investigation will be required.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-13 grade level, you must have one year (52 full weeks) of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes:
- Overseeing projects that require coordinating and integrating the work of others and providing progress reports to management or high-level officials; AND
- Underwriting single-family residential properties; AND
- Performing trend analysis, reporting findings and writing recommendations to management officials; AND
- Implementing and evaluating programs areas and providing recommendations for improvements.

Experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.
