Duties

Help
  • Control air traffic by issuing exact and precise instructions within delegated and complex airspace.
  • Issues control clearance and instructions to maintain separation among local traffic density.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of assigned airspace and issues advisories concerning traffic, weather, and altimeter settings.
  • Operate and activates control tower equipment, visual signaling devices and activation of primary crash alarm circuits.
  • Receive, posts, and relays flight data to the local controller and ground control/clearance delivery.
  • Perform ground control/clearance delivery duties, assuring effective movement of aircraft on all areas of the airport.
  • Establish contact with and controls aircraft to touchdown at the airfield after coordinated release from approach control.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • Incumbent must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Must possess and maintain Air Traffic Control Specialist (ATCS) certification.
  • This position requires that the applicant must have actively controlled traffic in an Air Traffic Control Tower facility within the last 36 months and is required to upload a copy of the FAA CTO certificate for that facility with the application.
  • Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the ATC Facility Chief and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a Control Tower Operator's license.
  • An applicant not currently occupying a GS-2152 "covered" position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment Army Flight physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Incumbent is subject to flight medical examinations (e.g., annual, after medical grounding) following appointment to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • This position is designated as Key Essential position and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • Employees hired for the first time (originally hired) into GS-2152 positions must not exceed the established Maximum Entry Age (MEA) at the time of appointment. The MEA for an Air Traffic Controller (ATC) is 36.
  • A DA Form 5019-R for Certain Positions Identified as Critical Under the Drug Abuse Testing Program or a Memorandum of Understanding and must pass urinalysis testing as required prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes independently performing all control functions in non-approach and non-radar approach control terminals; Issuing control instructions and advice to pilots in the vicinity of airports to assure proper separation of aircraft and to expedite their safe and efficient movement; Ability to act decisively under stressful situations and to maintain alertness over sustained periods of pressure; Ability to coordinate plans and actions with pilots and other controllers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service(GS-10).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent(GS-10).
