Summary

The Court Reporter Trainee is responsible for the verbatim reporting of the judicial and administrative proceedings to which they are assigned, regardless of the nature, difficulty, or location of the proceedings. When requested, the incumbent is further responsible for the accurate preparation and timely submission of the official transcript of the proceedings which constitutes an official record. This position is located in the Court Reporting Division of the D.C. Superior Court.

While the DC Courts has a telework policy, eligibility is determined by the respective division where the position is situated within the agency.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR DUTIES: 

  • Works with all the judges of the District of Columbia Courts and supporting staff in a competent and professional manner.
  • Provides accurate and timely transcripts of court proceedings that constitute official court records.
  • Safeguards Rich Text Format files, Secure Digital cards, voice writer, and backup audio files of the proceedings, by properly identifying records by date, judge, case title, and location.
  • Has available adequate and serviceable equipment for the efficient performance of duties without interruption to the Court's schedules, including remote court reporting.
  • Complies with all rules as contained in the Rules of Superior Court and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals relating to and dealing with court reporting, the timely production of transcripts, and additional directives as may be required by the division.
  • Takes shorthand at a minimum of 225 words per minute and possesses an excellent command of the English language.

  • A probationary period of one (1) year must be successfully completed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma and graduation from a National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) accredited court reporting program.

Must be able to take shorthand at a minimum of 225 words per minute.

Candidates must furnish their own equipment and software to be able to provide real-time reporting to the judiciary and to produce their own transcripts. 

Please note that authorization for the release of your adult criminal record revealing any convictions and forfeitures, and any criminal cases currently pending before the courts is required.  If you are selected for the position, a criminal history records check will be conducted.

Additional information

This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive Federal civil service.

Please note there is a mandatory one year probationary period for all non-judicial new employees.
