Duties

Help
  • Assisting Budget Analysts by processing, recording, distributing and filing routine funding documents.
  • Providing routine information about budget procedures.
  • Performing simple and routine tracking of budget transactions.
  • Entering routine budget data and information into database systems.
  • Preparing routine reports on account balances, status of funds, or other management data as required.
  • Using standard and routine formulas to calculate and/or verify budget calculations.

  • Must sign a Participant Agreement that sets forth the expectations for the internship.
  • Must maintain a cumulative and term grade point average of 2.5 or higher throughout internship.
  • Must be enrolled in classes a minimum of half time for the duration of the internship (include class schedule for Spring 2023 with application).
  • MUST PROVIDE all transcripts/proof of enrollment/acceptance, and/or current class schedule.
  • The entire period served as a Career/Indefinite Intern counts as the appointee's trial period. Prior Federal civilian service is credited toward the completion of the required trial period in the same manner as prescribed in 5 CFR 315.802.
  • Students who have graduated are not eligible for this position.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position AND
  • Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school AND
  • Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or higher AND
  • You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.
In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education.

To qualify at the GS-03 level you must meet the following:

Education: Completion of one (1) academic year of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree in a directly related field of study.

CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Interns may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements
  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted
  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement
  • Perform their job successfully
CAUTION FOR STUDENTS IN THEIR FINAL YEAR: Students that are graduating and are not subsequently enrolled in another program might not meet the work-hour requirements prior to graduation and will be at risk for not being able to convert to a career or career-conditional appointment.

Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours.

You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary.

Work Environment: The work is normally performed in an office setting.

Additional information

Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance. In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement. Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work.

Internship selection will be made at the GS-03 grade level. The full performance level of this position is Student Trainee (Budget) position is GS-07. Progression from the entry-level to the full performance level for this occupation will depend on successful completion of all requirements for promotion. Promotions may be considered after a year at each grade level, but are not guaranteed to occur on a specific time schedule.

If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be a Budget Analyst with full performance level (FPL) of GS-12; however, the target position and FPL may change based on the need of the organization at that time.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

The official worksite for the selectee is the duty station identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this duty location on a regular and recurring weekly basis. The selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
