This position is in the Earthquake Science Center (ESC) based either in Pasadena or Moffett Field, California; or Seattle, Washington.
Research within the ESC is directed towards the reduction of hazards associated with earthquakes. This position focuses on the application of space geodetic methods, particularly the use of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to characterize current earthquake-related deformation in space and time.
As a Research Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Plans, originates, and conducts long-range programs of fundamental and applied research aimed at using InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) methods.
Serves as technical and scientific leader in applying state-of-the-art InSAR and GNSS methods to goals of the ESC.
Serves as the Task Leader of the InSAR project, work involves the procurement, processing, analysis and interpretation of InSAR and GNSS data to detect and understand current and past deformation patterns.
responsible for conceiving and executing scientific research projects leading to an expanded knowledge base, new areas for further study, and answers to important questions pertaining to earthquake processes.
Oversee, mentor, and advise postdoctoral researchers and students conducting research at the PhD. and M.S. Level.
Operate a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Work of the position takes place mostly in an office or laboratory setting. No special physical effort is required. However, during emergency/earthquake response periods, training of personnel on new equipment, or field work, the scientist may be expected to hike distances of several kilometers over uneven terrain while carrying equipment. Field work may require the use of proper personal protective gear, working in dusty, hot, humid, and extreme cold environments, occasional off-road driving of 4-wheel drive vehicles, traveling to remote field sites in helicopters or small fixed wing planes, and/or boats. Lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 20 kilograms may be necessary. Most work takes place in office or laboratory settings with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as exposure to extreme temperature, noxious or toxic gasses, ice or flooding. Field work may occasionally also involve encounters with wilderness dangers.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).**OR
B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-13:
In addition to the Basic Requirements listed above, applicants must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Namely, working in a Rock Deformation or equivalent laboratory involving problems related to faulting and earthquakes.
The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position include measurement and analysis one or more of the following research disciplines: stable creep and stick-slip behavior on simulated faults; seismic velocity and attenuation; time-dependent compaction, dilatancy, strength recovery; transport properties such as permeability and electrical conductivity in rock; acoustic emission generated during fault nucleation and growth as an analog to seismicity patterns in the earth; fluid injection related to induced seismicity and enhanced geothermal stimulation. These studies were applied to problems in earthquake forecasting, the earthquake nucleation process, the earthquake cycle, crustal processes (including fluid circulation), borehole fluid injection, borehole stability, and the disposal of nuclear waste.
The complexity of this work typically required modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Geophysicists have extensive knowledge of the principles of geology, physics and/or chemistry, a highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty.
