Duties

  • As a participant in the Pathways Intern Program, you will receive both formal and on-the-job training to develop the required knowledge and skill to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Digitize geographic information by translating raw land-based data into code.
  • Receive training to learn to identify basic interrelationships within data and apply layers of geographic data to produce spatial analysis and derivative maps.
  • Develop mapping products and data layer files in accordance with established standards and training.
  • Complete basic data analysis and manipulation, utilizing standardized methods and tools, as well as scripts and processes to create tabular data, spatial data, or mapping products.
  • Perform recurring transactions within geospatial databases and systems to integrate data files and keep spatial and non-spatial data accurate and in compliance.
  • Conduct research to locate and obtain information from existing databases. Compiles geographic data from a variety of sources.

Qualifications

This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than 1 year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements, and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date.

To be eligible for the Pathways Internship Program, an applicant must: Be at least 16 years of age.

AND

A student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum);
You must upload an unofficial copy of your transcripts.

AND

Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum.

AND

Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.5 grade point average on a cumulative basis; You must upload an enrollment letter from your educational institution (Whether you are new or currently enrolled).

AND

You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program. In order to assess you meet a qualified status for this position and to refer you to the hiring manager, the agency must be able to determine that you meet the qualifications based on completed education (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED). Please be sure to include this information in your resume. For GS-05: Successful completion of at least four academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. (Note: You must provide copies of your transcripts).

You must meet all eligibility and qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

The agency may noncompetitively convert a Career/Indefinite Intern who is a U. S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets all agency program requirements and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the target occupational series at the time of completing all education requirements.

CONVERSION ELIGIBILITY: Interns may be converted, without a break in service, to a term, career or career conditional appointment upon completion of program requirements. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

  • Be a US Citizen
  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements.
  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted.
  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement
  • Perform their job successfully.

CAUTION FOR STUDENTS IN THEIR FINAL YEAR: Students that are graduating and are not subsequently enrolled in another program might not meet the work-hour requirements prior to graduation and will be at risk for not being able to convert to a career or career-conditional appointment.

Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours.

This position has eligibility to be converted to a term or perm appointment in the competitive service. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted. Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance. In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640-hour requirement. Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work. If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be a full performance level up to a GS-12. The target position and full performance level may change based on the need of the organization at that time. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted.

Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary, requiring long periods of sitting in one position, intense concentration, and working for several hours at a time. Stress may be experienced on a regular basis in attempting to respond to conflicting objectives and in working against tight deadlines
with limited resources.

Work Environment: The work is primarily in an office/computer room environment. Occasional fieldwork may be required. Fieldwork is in support of resource mapping projects and involves extended days of travel, sometimes in poor weather conditions. The trainee must be comfortable with less than
ideal conditions in remote settings in the accomplishment of mapping projects.

Internship Program
