  • This is a trainee/advanced trainee position in the natural resource management profession. Tasks are designed to orient the trainee in work related to any or all of the following:
  • forest and environmental planning, recreation, wildlife, fisheries, soils, hydrology, geology, special use permits, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) planning, wilderness use, minerals management and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • The responsibilities are listed at the full performance level.
  • Performs a variety of productive natural resource analytical and operational activities in one or more of several work types found on the unit.
  • Collects compartment, stand prescription, or presale information data for specified areas selected for vegetation management.
  • Collects and summarizes watershed data and soils data and administers assigned watershed improvement projects.
  • Makes studies of wildlife use, including studies of habitat, reports observations, and prepares appropriate reports.
  • Assists with fish habitat inventories, stocking, and population monitoring surveys.
  • Performs assigned phases of special use and minerals management by gathering and integrating data.
  • Compiles natural resource, topographic, and cartographic data for the creation of map products for reports and presentations.
  • Prepares well-researched and logically organized reports, presentations, summary of findings related to work assignments.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Related course work generally refers to courses that may be accepted as part of the program major.

OR Combination of education and experience that included 24 semester hours in course work in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, AND experience sufficient to demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation that is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field needed to perform the work of the occupation.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-5 level: No specialized experience required. Applicants who meet the basic requirements described in the individual occupational requirements are fully qualified for the GS-5 level.

For the GS-07: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: assisted in the preparation of documents and visual aids such as data tables, slides, posters, brochures, progress reports, summaries of field or laboratory work, or draft portions of manuscripts or environment compliance or planning documents related to managing natural resources; and/or assisted in routine observation, measurement, surveys, inventorying, and recording of scientific data used to support natural resource management plans, strategies, or permitted uses; and/or used Geographic Information System software to assist in preparation of resource input for natural resource related projects and/or has served as an inspector or contract administrator for parts of a project.

OR one full year of graduate level education; OR an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience; OR Superior Academic Achievement (SAA). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
