Help

The candidate selected will lead the development of protocols for quantum information processing, quantum sensing, and optical frequency metrology with trapped atomic ions. The candidate is expected to be able to work in a team environment, supervise students and postdocs, and build collaborations both within and outside of NIST. Work will include identifying opportunities in trapped ion quantum information processing and metrology as well as developing plans to address the opportunities. Effective communication of research and measurement results through publications and presentation at national and international conferences is expected.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

For ZP-III: In addition to the above basic requirements, all applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of the specialized experience at the GS-9 level (ZP-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as detailed knowledge of experimental atomic, molecular, and optical physics and experience working in an advanced atomic physics laboratory. Experience with one or more of the following systems: ultra-high vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, laser systems, high voltage systems and experimental control systems are required.

For the ZP-IV: In addition to the above basic requirements, all applicants must have one year (52 weeks) of the specialized experience at the GS-12 level (ZP-III at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as detailed knowledge of experimental atomic, molecular, and optical physics and experience working in an advanced atomic physics laboratory. Demonstrated experience in the design, conduct, and leadership of an advanced experimental program that utilizes one or more of the following technologies: ultra-high vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, laser systems, high magnetic fields and high voltage systems. Experience with writing scientific publications and giving scientific presentations is required.
