Duties

Help

Supervises archival processing staff, including work assignments, performance evaluations, etc.

Coordinates archival collection processing; recommends processing priorities; assigns archivists and technicians; approves processing plans; monitors progress; and maintains and reports processing statistics.

Implements new collections management and descriptive practices recommended by the Native American Collections Working Group, Inclusive Description Working Group, and other Library modernization efforts.

Serves as an expert in the organization, development, and implementation of multiple, concurrent projects relating to the archival processing, inventorying and cataloging of the Library’s ethnographic collections.

Solves highly complex problems relating to the processing, inventorying and cataloging of ethnographic collections, or problems that involve relationships among the different cataloging functions and Library systems.

Organizes, develops, and schedules training projects for a wide variety of materials related to bibliographic access and other cataloging and collection management tools for ethnographic collections.

Initiates, establishes, and maintains professional relationships with archivists, reference librarians, preservation engineers and other specialists to share resources and information as well as to coordinate workflow within the AFC and the Library.

Serves as a project leader, team leader, or chairperson for working groups, task forces, committees, etc., pertaining to the processing and cataloging of published and unpublished ethnographic materials held by the Library.

Required Qualifications

The following are required qualifications to be considered for this position:

Experience with creating collection management policies, archival collection processing plans, or grant proposals

Minimum three years of experience processing collections

Minimum three years of experience as a supervisor or similar leadership role that involved: communicating expectations; monitoring productivity of others; and providing direction with constructive feedback and coaching to staff.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred for this position:

Demonstrated experience engaging with communities documented in archival collections

Minimum three years of experience with arranging and describing processing of multi-format ethnographic collections

Minimum of three years of experience as a supervisor or similar role for archival processing staff that involved: communicating expectations; monitoring productivity of others; and providing direction with constructive feedback and coaching to staff.

Additional information

Although it is the Library's policy to afford the maximum pay benefit to employees when setting rates of pay, a new appointee who has had no previous Federal service will generally be paid at step one of the grade.
