Summary

Duties

Help
  • Participate in the development or application of enhanced natural resource simulation tools that assist land managers or state and federal agency personnel in decision-making at the farm and watershed level.
  • Provide data analysis to support policy formulation and implementation or decision making at the local, regional, or national level.
  • Participate in the development of enhanced simulation methods, interfaces, databases, or web-based systems to support science-based decision making and policy formulation.
  • Participate in the development, testing, and validation of novel model components or GIS data to enhance existing natural resources simulation tools and develop new interfaces, web-based applications, and other model related tools.
  • Participate in the production of novel methods, machine learning, or original computer code for simulating complex systems utilizing desktop or web-based interfaces, or the development of large scale databases.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Education Requirements
Degree:
biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND
In addition to meeting the basic education requirement stated above, all applicants must also meet the below minimum qualification requirements.

GS-09
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in the development of tools to assess research data; writing original programming code; and performing data management duties related to research studies.
OR
Education:
Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. Related degrees may include biological sciences or computer sciences.
OR
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above.

GS-11
Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience developing new interfaces, web-based applications, and other model related tools; participating in the development of tools to assess research data; develop original program code using modem Microsoft.NET programming languages; and conducting model calibration and validation with graphical and statistical techniques.
OR
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree if directly related. Related degrees may include biological sciences or computer sciences.
OR
A combination of education and experience as described above.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
