Duties

Help
  • Operate large industrial vehicles on a wide variety of terrains, ranging from smooth or rolling to rough and steep hillsides and canyons.
  • Operate cargo, van, stake-bed, or dump trucks with Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 22,000 pounds or more (usually with from 4 to 10 drive wheels, 6 or more forward speeds, and load rates over 8,000 pounds).
  • Operate gasoline and diesel powered industrial vehicles and attached equipment such as mower, plows, chisels, post-hole driller, lade, frontend loader, seeder, harrow, fertilizer spreader, etc.
  • Operate large industrial tractor with brush-cutting attachment to cut and clear cedar, oak, and other small trees (up to 9 inches in diameter) and brush from training areas and other parts of the installation.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Applicants with verified positive test results shall be refused employment.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state drivers license and any installation and/or DoD license required for the type of vehicle being driven.
  • This position requires incumbent to work an on-call work schedule to respond to after-hours emergencies. This may include, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

STANDING REGISTER: This is a Standing Register (Open Continuous) announcement for WG-5716-08, Engineering Equipment Operator, positions within the Directorate of Public Works, Fort Cavazos, TX. The initial cut-off date for referral is 17 April 2023; after this date additional cut-off dates will be established as vacancies occur.

NOTE: This announcement may be used to fill vacancies in various shops within the Operations and Maintenance Division.


SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain, for the duration of employment, a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), as required by section CFR 383.23 Subpart B, defining commercial driver's license qualifications.

NOTE: You must submit a copy of your Class A CDL with your application package for verification. Failure to do so will result in a rating of ineligible.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Engineering Equipment Operator~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Engineering Equipment Operator duties. I can operate a variety of heavy equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, graders and/or compaction road rollers. I can perform a variety of grounds maintenance tasks such as drilling posts, repairing ponds, terraces, and stream crossings. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is extended by the operator in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, legs, and feet to operate the equipment and attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating in rough terrain. The location of the controls causes the incumbent to work in awkward or strained positions for significant amounts of time. Required to lift, carry and position items weighting up to 50 pounds.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed in all types of weather to include excessive heat and cold, in rough terrain on hillsides and small canyons. Incumbent is exposed to injury from cutting blades and the possibility of the equipment turning over, and is subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from motor exhaust and from insecticide and herbicide. Required safety equipment must be worn at all times when so exposed.
