Help

As a Biologist/Physical Scientist within the National Climate Adaptation Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Engaging with scientific efforts, coordinating with managers, researchers, and community members to ensure high quality and continuity in project progress across a broad variety of climate adaptation related topics.
  • Synthesizing project management related data into meaningful, useable databases and other accessible structures.
  • Preparing and delivering oral and written summaries syntheses, reports, documents, briefing materials, fact sheets, handouts, and summaries of climate science relevant to research and natural and cultural resource management partners.
  • Planning and organizing meetings, conferences and/or workshops.
  • Assisting with development, execution, and management of multi-disciplinary research projects, which cross organizational boundaries, to address climate impacts to priority species and habitats.

These positions are remote, but the incumbent must reside in one of states listed below for each region:

The Southwest Research Coordinator will need to reside in one of the following states: California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona, and Arkansas.

The North Central Research Coordinator will need to reside in one of the following states: Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming or Kansas.

The Midwest Research Coordinator will need to reside in one of the following states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illionois, Iowa, or Missouri

Qualifications

Biologist:

For GS-12:

In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level.

Examples of experience at the GS-11 level may include: 1) independently planning and conducting comprehensive biological studies and investigations; 2) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques, processes, and procedures; 3) serving as a technical resource on biological issues. For examples 1-3, the assignments were planned and carried out independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.

1301 Series

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized experience at or equal to the next lower grade level. Examples of this experience may include, but are not limited to:

Examples of GS-12 level work may include: 1) planning and coordinating biology projects of considerable depth and/or breadth; 2) analyzing and interpreting biological related project data with novel and obscure problems; 3) developing new or significantly modified biological techniques, methods, or criteria; 4) providing advisory, planning, or reviewing services as a technical specialist on a biological issue. For examples 1-4, the work provided wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.
