Duties

Help

The mission of the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration's (TIGTA) Office of Investigations is to protect the Internal Revenue Service from internal and external threats and corruption that could negatively impact the IRS' ability to administer the nation's tax laws. We detect and deter waste, fraud and abuse in IRS programs and operations and protect the IRS against internal misconduct and corruption as well as external attempts to corrupt or threaten its employees. We provide independent oversight to the Treasury Department on matters involving IRS activities & the IRS Office of Chief Counsel

As an Investigative Analyst, you will:

  • Communicate with Field Division personnel about data resources and explores new ways to apply these data resources to emerging employee fraud trends.
  • Prepare and conduct briefings on new analytical techniques or IRS employee fraud detection scenarios to other investigative analysts, management, TIGTA SACs, and or Office of Investigations executives. Serves as a technical expert to management and other senior agents on critical operations.
  • Conduct valid and reliable research to analyze internal and external information to assess risk factors and identify high-risk areas. Evaluate complex systems, control and information, and provide sufficient, competent and reliable evidence to support issues on integrity situations. Interviews IRS subject matter experts as needed to fully evaluate business process internal controls. Ensure all elements of findings are developed and provides appropriate recommendations.
  • Identify and develops new scenarios for detecting IRS employee fraud and misconduct perpetrated through the use of IRS computer systems. These proactive misconduct detection scenarios identify IRS employees who abuse the public's trust in the integrity of Federal tax administration. These scenarios also identify IRS policy or procedure changes which can prevent IRS employee misuse of computer systems.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience: For the GS-13, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes:

  • Applying investigative procedures and techniques in order to analyze research and/or evaluate information; AND
  • Performing investigative analysis based on information received from multiple sources; AND
  • Reviewing and evaluating data, material, documents and databases to develop investigative leads; AND
  • Developing, writing, and editing investigative reports and related correspondence.
Specialized Experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience for this position includes:
  • Applying investigative procedures and techniques in order to analyze research and/or evaluate information; AND
  • Performing investigative analysis based on information received from multiple sources; AND
  • Reviewing and evaluating data, material, documents and databases to develop investigative leads.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT (CONTINUED):
  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Public Trust - Background Investigation will be required.

  • You will be required to regularly report to the Duty Station listed above. While teleworking is an option, approval is at management's discretion based on duties, business needs, performance, etc.
