This vacancy is advertised to fill two positions in the following Institutes/Centers:

Critical Care Medicine Department Clinical Epidemiology Section's Mathematical Statistician's Duties:

Incumbent serves as the primary statistician for the Clinical Epidemiology Section in its research and operational projects, which are expected to meet national and international standards for excellence in all aspects including statistical design, monitoring, and analysis.

The duties for this position include, but not limited to the following:
  • Serving as principal statistician for clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory investigations relating to the burden, outcomes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to critical care predominantly using large databases.
  • Providing methodological support for clinical trials and observational studies conducted by the Clinical Epidemiology and other entities within CCMD.
  • Consulting in the design and analysis of data from program sources for CCMD intramural and extramural studies.
  • Participating in conferences on behalf of CCMD when expert statistical input is required involving other NIH Institutes, and/or other federal agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration.
  • Making budget recommendations for departmental, national, and international cooperative research efforts.
  • Reviewing and approving the statistical design and analysis of planned study protocols submitted to CCMD by collaborators.
  • Serving on data safety monitoring boards for program sponsored clinical trials as well as for trials with outside sponsorship.
  • Reviewing manuscripts submitted to statistical and other scientific journals.
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) - Office of Biostatistics Research Office, Office of the Clinical Director, Division of Intramural Research Mathematical Statistician's Duties:

The incumbent serves as a Mathematical Statistician, providing a wide range of advice and consultation to staff on statistics related issues.

The duties for this position include, but not limited to the following:
  • Serving as a senior collaborator within the Office of the Clinical Director, DIR and to other divisions, as an expert statistical advisor to NHLBI-sponsored clinical studies.
  • Collaborating effectively with the coordinating center statisticians.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of relevant new developments in statistical research and computing.
  • Taking a leading role in initiating research projects, often in collaboration with others, in the application or modifications of mathematical statistics required for data analysis or for statistical investigations.
  • Providing consultation in the design and analysis of NHLBI intramural and extramural studies.
  • Participating in a cooperative effort to accomplish Office, Division and Institute goals.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Mathematical Statistician, GS-1529-14, you must:

Education Requirement

A. Have a degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics (of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics). Courses acceptable toward meeting the mathematics course requirement must have included at least four of the following: differential calculus, integral calculus, advanced calculus, theory of equations, vector analysis, advanced algebra, linear algebra, mathematical logic, differential equations, or any other advanced course in mathematics for which one of these was a prerequisite. Courses in mathematical statistics or probability theory with a prerequisite of elementary calculus or more advanced courses will be accepted toward meeting the mathematics requirements, with the provision that the same course cannot be counted toward both the mathematics and the statistics requirement;

OR

B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

In addition, in order to qualify for a Mathematical Statistician at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: provides statistical consultation for research in the biological medical sciences; performs regression and survival analysis, contingency tables and longitudinal data analysis as appropriate; performs sample size calculations for laboratory and/or clinical data; develops new statistical methodologies or adapts existing methodologies to analyze data derived from research studies; prepares reports on the methods of analysis and the results of the analyses; prepares the results for publication in scientific journals and for presentation at scientific meetings.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
