Duties

Help

As a Health Science Policy Analyst, your duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Applies comprehensive experience and in-depth knowledge of a relevant area of biomedical research (such as virology, biosecurity, biosafety, stem cell and developmental biology) to policy development.
  • Consults with a wide range of individuals who are involved in scientific research to identify major issues, roadblocks, and potential actions necessary for policy development and interpretation.
  • Provides staff support to expert committees and major meetings organized by the BBEBPD to address major program and science policy issues and development of biomedical research policies related to biosafety, biosecurity, and/or emerging biotechnologies (e.g., stem cell and developmental biology).
  • Assists in drafting sections of reports on the scientific initiatives and advances generated by NIH program activities, as required by Congress during the annual appropriations process.
  • Maintains awareness of scientific and legislative developments in National health status and issues having implications for current and planned health research and research training programs by supporting interagency policy development activities.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

You must have a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Additional Requirements:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: analyzing and evaluating the effectiveness of biomedical research programs; providing advice and assistance on policy issues affecting the organization and biomedical research community; making recommendations for long-range and immediate program objectives and proposals; preparing background materials for senior staff that capture the current state of knowledge in a policy area; and providing support to committees and meetings to address program and biomedical research policy issues.

  • At the supervisor's discretion, this position may offer work schedule flexibilities: telework (work from home on a regular basis or ad hoc basis but reports to the office at least once a week/two days a pay period).

  • 4. Ability to collaborate with and advise staff on scientific policy in accordance with organizational goals.
