The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is a federally chartered, nonpartisan institution that was created by the US Congress to serve as America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust and an educational institution dedicated to the history and lessons of the Holocaust. The Museum seeks to educate Americans from all 50 states and all walks of life as well as international audiences. The Museum has three areas of expertise: Holocaust remembrance, Holocaust scholarship and education, and genocide prevention.

Duties include:

Assists in the daily operation of the Museum, including the opening and closing of the building and the preparation of staff and volunteers who help the visiting public throughout the day in the Museum’s public spaces, and performs specialized functions vital to the Museum’s daily and on-going operations. Service areas include Information Desk, Groups Desk, Coat Check, Elevator Lobbies, and Building entrances.

Participates in short-term and on-going projects, staffing for special events, training sessions, and meetings. Monitors effectiveness of plans, makes recommendations for revisions as necessary.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements in the vacancy announcements are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook, which contains federal qualification standards. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You qualify for the GS-5 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-4 (or equivalent) grade level in the Federal government, performing the following duties:

Ensuring the Museum floor is staffed in accordance with the daily schedule; handling changes to floor assignments, as needed; providing oversight and troubleshooting of all incidents and occurrences in either the exhibition or general public spaces; perform various office functions and implement office procedures in support of visitor service programs and activities; and resolving visitor-interface problems within the public areas of the Museum.
