This Legal Assistant (Office Automation) provides a wide variety of technical assistance services within our Criminal Division.
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Legal Assistant (Office Automation) support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York, located in Central Islip, New York, focusing in the areas of legal support, legal research, preparation and management of evidence and discovery, case management, and administrative support.
Typical work assignments will include:
Using knowledge of a variety of legal regulations, precedents, and practices, examines, prepares and processes technical legal correspondence and documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format.
Conducting factual and legal research in legal and non-legal databases and providing requested information.
Aiding in the preparation and organization of evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial.
Contributing to reports summarizing the case status, including legal issues, factual issues, and case developments.
Receiving visitors and telephone callers and furnishing requested information concerning pending and closed matters and cases, functions, and general procedures of the office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) applying knowledge of legal regulations, techniques, and procedures to perform a variety of legal assistance work. This type of work includes:
Scheduling hearings, meetings or engagements.
Examining case files to determine sufficiency of documentation to identify material that may be pertinent to issues or cases.
Conducting research for case information through records, reference or historical material.
Generating, modifying, and interpreting computer-generated reports.
Typing Proficiency: The incumbent must be able to type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.(A typing test may be administered at a later time in the process.)

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-06is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-07 level.
