BCS is responsible for the support of fundamental research in all behavioral and cognitive science fields. As one of the 13 principal statistical agencies, NCSES is a principal source of federal statistics about the science and engineering enterprise and serves as the central federal clearinghouse for the collection, interpretation, analysis, and dissemination of objective data on science, engineering, technology, and research and development.

The BCS Division and NCSES welcomes applications from experts with experience in basic research who can help shape, invigorate, and manage the following funding programs;

Human Networks and Data Science (HNDS)

The Human Networks and Data Science program (HNDS) supports research that enhances understanding of human behavior by leveraging data and network science research across a broad range of topics.  HNDS research will identify ways in which dynamic, distributed, and heterogeneous data can provide novel answers to fundamental questions about individual and group behavior. HNDS is especially interested in proposals that provide data-rich insights about human networks to support improved health, prosperity, and security.

Areas of responsibility include support for infrastructure to develop data resources and relevant analytic techniques in the context of human networks and of core research that uses data science to generate novel understandings of human networks – particularly understandings that can improve the outcomes of significant societal opportunities and challenges. In addition, other areas include direct or indirect data collection on the STEM enterprise, new or improved indicators of S&T activities and methodologies to analyze S&T statistical data, and innovative ways to communicate S&T statistics. The Program Director will also utilize their expertise to engage in cross-cutting activities across directorates

National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) Grants Program

NCSES supports the collection of statistical data on research and development trends, the science and engineering workforce, U.S. competitiveness, and the condition and progress of the Nation’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education; research using the data it collects and on methodologies in areas related to the work of the Center; and the education and training of researchers in the use of its own and other large-scale, nationally representative data sets. NCSES’s grant program, Research on the Science and Technology Enterprise: Indicators, Statistics, and Methods (NCSES S&T), is designed to advance analytic and methodological research in support of understanding the science and technology (S&T) enterprise.
