Duties

Help

As an Exhibition Coordinator, you will serve as a Senior Designer in overseeing the design, production, and installation of exhibitions; supervising up to 3 design and/or production staff; managing office functions in conjunction with the Head of Exhibitions; and providing design and advisory services to museum staff on workspace management and interior design concerns.

In this position, you will:

  • Assist Head of Exhibitions with department management concerns including work assignments, project management, staff supervision, budget formulation, and review and approval of office purchasing and travel.
  • As senior designer for changing exhibitions and permanent collections installations at American Art, the incumbent works with maximum independence to develop exhibition spaces and millwork that is appropriate accessible, and aesthetically appealing.
  • Perform work related to the design of interior and exterior spaces at the Smithsonian Art Museum and it’s Renwick Gallery, including the renovation of building and office space, and the selection of carpet, furniture, window treatments, and other interior design components.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT: The incumbent requires dexterity and facility with close work and detail, as well as physical and intellectual stamina. The incumbent is required to have considerable amounts of walking, standing, and looking, while keeping the mind and eyes focused on exhibition's objectives and presentation, during exhibition installation.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as managing museum staff; working with exhibition design and production; and performing workspace design and construction management.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.
