Summary

You will serve as Science Program Advocate, Project Scientist, and a science subject matter expert for the Transform to Open Science (TOPS) Project Office in the Science Research and Projects Division, Science and Technology Office at Marshall Space Flight Center. You will partner with the TOPS Project Manager to support the Agency's Science Mission Directorate's Chief Science Data Officer (CSDO) in advocating for and coordinating the implementation of NASA's Transform to Open Science Program.

Duties

Help
  • Plans and leads, in partnership with Project Manager (PM), TOPS project office activities to include Open Science advocacy, community engagement, research capacity building and sharing, Open Science training and certification, and outreach.
  • Collaborates with the TOPS project and communication team to develop, review, and implement a dynamic TOPS social media presence, including hosting and storing of open science tools and research materials on services such as GitHub.
  • Coordinates and consults with science discipline subject matter experts for development and review of Open Science training materials, Open Science challenges, and implementation progress.
  • Maintains a direct collaboration and information bridge with/to the Chief Science Data Officer (CSDO) and TOPS Program Scientist.
  • Leads, conducts, coordinates and integrates TOPS theoretical and empirical research efforts across multiple center teams and science disciplines.
  • Performs science outreach for enhancing the diversity and inclusion of underrepresented communities in open science.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

GS-14: To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the federal sector:

  • Collaborating with national or international science research teams, contributing significant project outcomes as demonstrated in project assignments that apply open science policies;
  • Developing and/or leading competed or directed science research projects and applications tools related to the practice of science research and analysis in an open science environment;
  • Overseeing engagement and outreach in the science community to including communicating science research and/or related data applications results in peer-reviewed forums.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:

a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
