Duties

Help
  • Participate in structural and aircraft rescue.
  • Participate in fire prevention and protection, hazardous materials response, and providing first aid.
  • Select route to and from fire and rescue emergencies with regard to safety, road conditions, traffic patterns, and traffic regulations.
  • Conduct fire prevention inspections as directed.
  • Conduct routine and non-routine inspections of fire crew members' safety equipment, firefighting equipment used to extinguish fires, emergency vehicles, and fire station areas.
  • Provide training for fire prevention and safety classes.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program. Must sign DA Form 5019 acknowledging both pre-appointment and periodic random drug testing requirements.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • An individual not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position is required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Incumbent must participate in the Fire Division's Fitness and Wellness Program that includes a cardiovascular physical fitness program IAW NFPA 1583 and DODI 6055.06.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • A valid state and government driver's license is required as well as the appropriate Emergency Vehicle Operator's certification to operate vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
  • Incumbent must obtain and maintain an Emergency Vehicle Operator's certification to operate vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
  • This position requires the incumbent to successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator's course.
  • Position is "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to work overtime as directed and is subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime.
  • This position requires the incumbent to maintain a functioning telephone at their residence to aid in contact during recall and/or emergency situations.
  • This position requires you to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes nights, weekends and holidays.

Standing Register: This is a Standing Register (Open Continuous) announcement for GS-0081-5/6/7, Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician) positions within the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fort Cavazos, TX. The initial cut-off date for referral is 31 March 2023; after this date additional cut-off dates will be established as vacancies occur.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify at the GS-05 grade level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

To qualify at the GS-06 grade level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; and responding to basic hazardous incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

To qualify at the GS-07 grade level:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience includes controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; and controlling hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Certifications: In addition to the above requirements, this position requires that the incumbent possess and maintain the following DoD IFSAC or Pro-Board issued certifications:
GS-5 Requirement: Firefighter I & II.
GS-6 Requirement: Firefighter I & II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Operations.
GS-7 Requirement: Firefighter I & II, Airport Firefighter, HAZMAT Technician, Driver Operator-Pumper and Driver Operator-Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) and a State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic License.

Time in Grade Requirement for GS-5: Candidates may be advanced without time restriction to positions up to GS-05 if the position to be filled is no more than two grades above the lowest grade the employee held within the preceding 52 weeks under his or her latest non-temporary competitive appointment.
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-6: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).
Time in Grade Requirement for GS-7: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
