This position functions as a Supervisory Public Affairs Specialist (Head of Communications and Marketing) for NPG with primary responsibility for developing, and implementing communications, marketing and social media plans and other initiatives to raise the museum’s profile, visitation, and the quality and quantity of media coverage and social media audiences, under the general advisory supervision of the Director of Audience Engagement.
In this position, you will:
Responsible for designing, planning, and executing a national and/or international public affairs/communications program of major scope and significance conveying cultural and strategic information about major complex public program that inform and educate general and specialized publics about the organization’s programs, projects, and activities.
Create complex, multi-channel communications plans and marketing strategies for exhibitions, program, and events.
Monitor communications staff members in their performance, providing administrative direction in terms of general objectives and specific assignments.
Develop proposals and plans to handle a variety of complex issues with controversial, sensitive, and political implications.
Requires career/career-conditional status or eligibility.

Conditions of Employment: The incumbent's work involves frequent movement to and about the NPG’s galleries and other public spaces. Some media and public affairs events are conducted outside the museum buildings. Additionally, early morning, evening and weekend hours are sometimes required. The incumbent is normally required to be present at special events, many of which take place in the evening or during weekends. Because of the need to respond to developing events and emerging news stories, the incumbent must frequently respond to emails and telephone calls outside of normal business hours.

Qualifications
Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as creating public awareness on a national level of a museum’s exhibitions, educational programs, and events.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Skill in supervising the production of a wide variety of traditional and digital materials to achieve unique and specific objectives, some of a complex and potentially controversial nature.
Skill in dealing efficiently and pleasantly with a variety of people with a high degree of poise under pressure and to interact diplomatically, effectively, and on a sustained basis with absolute discretion with staff at all levels, donors, advisory board members, and members of the general public.
