Duties

The Collections Specialist carries out collections management activities. 

In this position, you will:

  • Determine the storage of artifacts by analyzing storage requirements.  Advise on storage plans and approaches.
  • In preparation for storage, shipping, transportation or exhibition, disassemble, assemble, load, unload, secure, crate or cradle artifacts.  Perform all types of specimen-handling operations, including those that require the operation of forklifts or similar equipment, box trucks and other vehicles or equipment.
  • Monitor environmental conditions of the collections storage areas, which includes the integrated pest management (IPM) program at NMAAHC storage locations and initiate action to correct conditions detrimental to objects.
  • Place and monitor remote temperature humidity monitoring systems, flood detectors, good-candle meters and UV meters.
  • Act as team lead or coordinate museum technicians, interns, visitors, researchers and contractors in the collection areas and their work.
  • Write condition reports.  Define specifications and provide this information to unit supervisors to solicit bids from vendors.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled. Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology. 

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience creating and coordinating workflow related to collections processing, creating custom object housing, preparing objects for shipping, providing transport and scheduling, installation and de-installation for exhibition, environmental monitoring, object handling, training of museum technicians, contractors, interns, and/or volunteers, and collections access support.

Or Education: 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above.  The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Knowledge of procedures and methods used in the handling, storage, transport, care and preservation of museum collections.
  2. Skill in managing oversized objects including planning and execution for handling, rehousing, and support plans.
  3. Knowledge of integrated pest management.
  4. Ability to monitor environmental controls (e.g., temperature and relative humidity).
  5. Ability to communicate orally.
  6. Ability to communicate in writing.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
