Duties

Help

As a Health Specialist you will:
  • Review data and progress reports, and implement corrective actions needed to achieve adequate research progress.
  • Plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate programs and initiatives in the assigned specialty area of research.
  • Participate in the development of Program Announcements, Requests for Applications, and Requests for Proposals in areas of research.
  • Take administrative measures to achieve program goals through contacts with researchers and in administration of grant applications and ongoing projects, and communicate program goals in response to inquiries.
  • Monitor the status of project applications and awards from peer review through post-award administration and produces documents and responses to requests for information required.
  • Provide assistance to prospective grantees on various grant mechanisms and grant review processes.
  • Assist in drafting technical reports, analyzing data from the studies, and publication of research findings.
  • Conduct literature search on relevant scientific areas; drafts and circulates approval memos; track and incorporate suggested edits to initiatives.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Health Specialist, GS-0601, position you must have successfully completed a full 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).

You qualify at the GS-11 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:

A. completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or, have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field; OR

B. at least 1 year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Planning and conducting health-related projects; conducting analysis of segments of health-related research projects or programs; assisting in the preparation of comprehensive reports of project results; carrying out assigned portions of data analysis and database development; and provides guidance to senior officials on scientific research planning activities; OR

C. a combination of graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

You qualify at the GS-12 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:

You must have at least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Planning and conducting scientific and health research project and program analysis and evaluation; maintaining databases used in scientific program evaluation; developing methodologies for tracking recurring requirements and progress of scientific research; and providing analytic and interpretative data used in formulating organizational policies and goals.

You qualify at the GS-13 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:

You must have at least one year of qualifying specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: Planning and conducting scientific and health research project and program analysis and evaluation; developing and maintaining databases used in scientific program evaluation; implementing, evaluating and reporting on projects designed to track the progress of scientific research; interpreting data used to formulate and guide organizational policies and goals; and representing an organization to communicate health policy and planning issues to committees, senior management and the public.

You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
