  • Provide technical assistance concerning forest diseases to land managers.
  • Provide recommendations to land users regarding ways they can best use land, promote plant growth, or avoid or correct problems.
  • Identify pathogens to determine damage caused by organisms.
  • Coordinate and implement all aspects of a pathogen detection, evaluation, prevention, and control program.
  • Conduct evaluations to gain knowledge concerning disease biology, ecological relationships, parasitic effects, survey methodology, or new control techniques.
  • Analyze collected data in consultation with other professionals
  • Write guidelines related to plant pathology that are incorporated into project plans or other management documents.
  • Implement technology transfer plans to provide information to specialists and resource managers.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

Basic Requirement:GS-0434:Degree: plant pathology; or a related scientific discipline that included at least 20 semester hours in basic botany or plant science, and 10 semester hours in plant pathology.

Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, agronomy, forestry, horticulture, or similar subjects may be used to meet the 20-semester-hour requirement in basic botany or plant science. To meet the specific 10-semester-hour requirement in plant pathology, the courses must have been in plant pathology, or have dealt with specific subject matter areas of plant pathology such as those concerned with viruses, fungal or bacterial diseases, host-plant relationships, biotic or chemical controls, environmental or physiological diseases, parasitic diseases, etc.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-09 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level; OR a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Examples of specialized experience are: Assisting in conducting evaluation surveys to determine the status of forest pathogens; assisting with analysis of plant pathogen data and preparation of initial reports; assisting with participation in forest disease prevention and/or suppression projects; or assisting in conducting training in the identification and management of harmful forest pathogens.

For the GS-11 Level: Applicants must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled); OR one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level; OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.). Examples of specialized experience are: Conducting evaluation surveys to determine the status of forest pathogens; analyzing plant pathogen data and preparing initial reports; participating in forest disease prevention and/or suppression projects; or assisting in conducting training in the identification and management of harmful forest pathogens.

For the GS-12 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Examples of specialized experience are: Planning, coordinating, conducting, and reporting on evaluation surveys on Federal, state, and private lands to determine the status of forest pathogens; completing suppression and prevention projects that reduced the adverse effects of a pathogen; or recommending reforestation, harvesting, and silvicultural practices that reduced losses.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
