Duties

Help

This Paralegal Specialist provides a wide range of legal support services to one or more Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSA) involved in criminal prosecutions and grand jury investigations for federally cognizable cases in the Criminal Division.

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing Paralegal Specialist support in the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York, located in Brooklyn, New York, focusing in the areas of legal assistance.

Typical work assignments will include:

  • Analyzing legal decisions; compiling substantive information on legal subjects; and collecting, analyzing, and evaluating evidence in connection with hearings, appeals, litigation, or advisory services when these assignments require a specialized knowledge of law.
  • Conducting interviews of agents and potential witnesses to assist the AUSA in preparation for grand jury or trial.
  • Providing a variety of legal assistance and technical work requiring a specialized knowledge of processes, procedures, and practices to support legal activities.
  • Preparing exhibits for trial which typically involves a wide range of visual materials including charts, diagrams, photographs, and models.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

To qualify at the GS-09 level, you must possess:

Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service performing (obtained in either the public or private sectors) the duties listed below:

  • Performing legal research to compose legal documents and correspondence.
  • Gathering and analyzing data to determine its usefulness in resolving legal issues.
  • Using automated resources and technology for the development, presentation, and prosecution of federal cases.
OR two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree, or master's or equivalent graduate degree; or a combination of the required experience and education for this grade level. Your education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
