Help

As a Survey Technician (Survey and Mapping Coordinator), you will:

  • Review project requirements prior to initiation of survey work and establish scope of work to be performed, coordinating with all parties. Identify documentation, supplies, equipment, and project features and communicate them to the survey crew. Determine the most effective and appropriate survey techniques and methodology, staffing patterns, budget, and schedule estimates and special considerations.
  • Perform reviews active projects to determine adequacy and quality of data being developed and progress toward established goals. Resolve operational problems beyond scope of project engineer’s responsibility. Review survey data for conformance to established scope of work and spot checks for accuracy, adequacy, and timeliness. Ensure that preconstruction staking is appropriate for purpose intended. Conduct final reviews of selected projects to assure that final product is consistent with results desired.
  • Develop, implement, and utilize state-of-the-art survey equipment, data collectors, personal computers, and related software packages to fully automate collection and transmission of survey data into and out of the Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) system.
  • Provide technical leadership and professional expertise to a survey crew that performs field surveys and develop operational manuals to implement new processes or procedures adopted by the unit and conducts follow-up training sessions on the new technology for field personnel.

The ideal candidate will be a mid-career survey professional with progressive advancement through field work and office computations to produce survey mapping for the use in developing engineering construction plans.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: You will be required to complete a background/security investigation.
  • DRIVER'S LICENSE: You must have a valid state driver’s license and be fully qualified to operate a government-owned vehicle.
  • TRAVEL: The position involves a significant amount of travel away from your duty station for extended periods of time.  Travel may often be to remote locations. You must be willing to travel for extended periods of time, often to remote locations.
  • TELEWORK ELIGIBILITY: This position is approved for telework. The number of telework days approved is determined by the agency policy, the approval of your immediate supervisor, and if applicable, approval of additional officials. You are required to report to the office on a regular basis since this is not a full-time telework position or approved as a remote work position.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements for series 0817 (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above): Specialized experience is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify for the Grade 12, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:

  • Experience in preparing, monitoring, and reviewing field surveys; AND
  • Experience in working with survey documents, such as land descriptions, record plats, title reports, utility plans, highway plans and construction cut sheets; AND
  • Experience using survey field equipment (such as survey levels, Robotic Total Stations, and GPS receivers) and software programs for post processing field data (such as GEOPak, MicroStation, and ORD).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  1. Surveying - Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods used in the measurement or determination of land boundaries, distances, elevations, areas, angles, and other features of the earth’s surface.
  2. Communications - Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens effectively; clarifies information as needed. Writes in a clear, concise, organized, and convincing manner for the intended audience.
  3. Computer Skills - Uses computers, software applications, databases, and automated systems to accomplish work.
