Summary

Participate either as a leader or member of a number of interdisciplinary ONP implementation and operational planning teams charged with periodically updating the Agency's National Programs to reflect changes in national priorities and policies
Use knowledge of advanced theories, principles, concepts, methods and socio-economic impacts of basic and applied research in the food and agricultural sciences.
Coordinate planning for program strategy objectives or major components of an objective.
Identify research needs of user groups, including action agencies, and recommends planning changes necessary to respond to these needs.
Maintain a dynamic communication system with Area Directors, Research Leaders, and scientists involved in the program area under the incumbent's purview.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements for Biological Scientist Series, 0401 Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirements for Chemist Series, 1320 Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirements for Nutrionist Series, 0630
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics(external link) (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND)(external link) (formerly American Dietetic Association(external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. OR
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists. OR
Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

Specialized Experience:Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-15 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-14 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience monitoring and coordinating scientific research of varied disciplines; implementing programs that improve cooperation and coordination of food and agricultural research with Federal agencies, universities, or other science and education organizations; and evaluating and recommending commitment of resources for research programs.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
