As an Archives Specialist, you will:

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-13. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

  • Use knowledge of current and emerging archival, records, and information management principles, concepts, practices and methods to identify, understand, evaluate and advise on records management issues.
  • Review Federal agency records schedules, appraise records to assess their permanent or temporary value, and process records schedules.
  • Conduct research and analysis for the purposes of reviewing, revising, and improving schedules and conducting other records and information management studies.
  • Identify appropriate and relevant information resources, assess the value and significance of the information, and evaluate the potential future use of the information. Recommend appropriate actions based on analytical findings and conclusions.
  • Study and analyze agency practices in order to understand records that are being appraised/scheduled. Understand, research, analyze, and apply legislation, regulations, organizational policies, and similar governances that relate to products being developed and records being appraised.
  • Develop and review proposals for changes in NARA's records management policies, guidance, processes and procedures.

The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.   • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation.
  • Complete a Declaration for Federal Employment to determine your suitability for Federal employment, at the time requested by the agency.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized experience at the GS-13 level: For the GS-13, specialized experience is defined as one year of experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent that is directly related to the position and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position includes experience:

Drafting, creating, or implementing federal agency records schedules.

AND

Reviewing federal record schedules to assess their permanent or temporary value.

AND

Independently applying knowledge and technical expertise to records management practices and principles to provide federal agencies (internal or external) and/or the general public with records management guidance including complex, non-routine questions, issues, or problems.

To be qualified for this position at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:

Reviewing and implementing federal agency records schedules.

AND

Assess federal agency record schedules permanent or temporary value in consultation with supervisor as required.

AND

Applying knowledge and technical expertise to records management practices and principles to provide federal agencies (internal or external) and/or the general public with records management guidance including routine and non-routine questions, issues, or problems in consultation with supervisor as required.

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-13, you must have been at the GS-12 level for 52 weeks.
For the GS-12, you must have been at the GS-11 level for 52 weeks.
