Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

or

Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

For GS-12, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 level. Specialized experience for this position includes providing expert advice and consultation on statistical and data related projects requiring deep knowledge in mathematical statistical theory and inference; demonstrating strong ability to conduct original theoretical research to produce new or improved mathematical statistical methodology; planning, development, and research with peer-reviewed published results, evaluation and execution of assignments of significance and importance; applying a comprehensive knowledge of mathematical statistical research being done by others in related fields; and consultation on a variety of problems involving the theory or application of mathematical statistical methods, statistical computing, and applications to data.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.

Additional information

If hired for this position with the Census Bureau, at its headquarters office located in Suitland, Maryland, you will be expected to temporarily telework to maximum extent while the headquarters building is being renovated. Once permitted to return to the office building, you will be expected to do so within 30 calendar days of receiving notification. At that time, you may be eligible to continue to telework or work remotely two or more days a pay period consistent with the Census Bureau's flexible telework and remote work policies and approval from your supervisor.
