Help

  • Respond to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness, and sometimes encounters situations, which maybe life threatening.
  • Make an independent preliminary assessment of the patients conditions.
  • Conduct a complete advanced examination of the patient to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the patient's condition.
  • Determine the appropriate way to facilitate the movement and transport of the patient.
  • Prioritize treatments for the patient having multiple problems and employs a variety of established basic and advanced emergency medical techniques, methods and equipment.
  • Recognize the need for ancillary personnel and direct all aspects of patient care and communication in the field for EMT-Intermediate level and below.
  • Perform vehicle maintenance up to and including cleaning and disinfection of each ambulance and equipment daily.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Individual Occupational Requirements

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
GS-03: Six (6) months of general experience or Successful completion of one (1) year of study that included in medical, health, or related fields.

GS-04: Six (6) months of general and six (6) months of specialized experience to required or Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position.

GS-05: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level or Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.

GS-06: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level.

General Experience
  • (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or
  • (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
Specialized Experience
Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

Training
Completion of appropriate training such as in-service training programs, training acquired while serving in the Armed Forces, and government-sponsored developmental training programs will be allowed credit on a month for-month basis, generally through the GS-5 level. Such training meets general or specialized experience requirements depending upon its applicability. Completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than 1 year may meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. Courses of this type normally require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than the usual 20 hours per week, and are usually of at least 3 months duration. Such courses may have been obtained through a variety of programs such as those offered by technical schools and military training programs. To be creditable, such a course must have been designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled, and must have provided the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks:

Examples of specialized experience at the GS-04 grade level
Non-professional work of a technical or support nature in the field of health and medicine, i.e., recording height, weight, applying sterile dressings, preparing patients for evaluation and treatment, restocking medical supplies, ensuring medical equipment is in proper operating condition.

Examples of specialized experience at the GS-05 grade level
Taking vital signs, determining what the provider needs to treat the patient, performing catheterizations, providing instructions to patient, assisting the provider in medical treatments, collecting a wide variety of specimens.

Examples of specialized experience at the GS-06 grade level
Independently conducts a complete assessment, using knowledge of topographic anatomy, major body systems, emergency medicine techniques, ability to sufficiently understand the legal considerations of emergency care.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Additional information

Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. Your Human Resources Specialist will provide a list of documents acceptable as vaccination proof and instructions on how to submit your vaccination documentation or how to request a medical or religious exemption, if needed.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Recruitment or relocation incentives may be authorized. At least a 6 month service agreement will be required.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
