Summary

One (1) permanent Full-Time Medical Supply Technician position to be filled in the Central Sterilization and Reprocessing (CSR), Nursing-Ambulatory Surgery (OR) Department at the Whiteriver Service Unit (WRSU) in Whiteriver, Arizona. The Incumbent will be responsible for decontaminating, assembling, processing, sterilizing, and issuing items for use in the hospital and various clinics. The Incumbent will be supervised by the Supervisor, Nursing-OR, WRSU.

  • Receiving and disassembling used and contaminated equipment; removing gross contamination by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and using ultrasonic equipment to remove soil, blood, tissue fragments or body fluids; and reassembling and checking sterilized equipment for proper function.
  • Organizing and assembling routine/specialty surgical instrument trays or other sterilized supplies; and filling special requests, as needed.
  • Operating and maintaining ultrasonic cleaner, direct-impingement washer, steam autoclave, gas plasma and liquid parametric acid sterilizers; and maintaining records of processed loads and load items.
  • Inventorying medical supplies and equipment by maintaining records, and determining reordering needs and removing outdated items.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
FOR GS-04 Grade Level:

  • Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterilized and unsterilized medical supplies and equipment.
  • Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in courses such as those shown above for GS-03.
  • Combination of specialized experience and education post high school with courses related to the occupation that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
FOR GS-05 Grade Level:
  • Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterilized and unsterilized medical supplies and equipment. The applicant must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating condition of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaner, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker.
  • Successful completion of a 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with course related to the position.
  • Combination of specialized experience and education post high school with courses related to the occupation that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Additional information

Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-05 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
