Duties

Help

The Visual Information Specialist (Graphics) participates in the design, production, installation and maintenance of a wide variety of museum exhibition graphic elements and building signage.

In this position, you will:

  • Use graphic design computing equipment and industry standard computer software, such as Apple Macintosh computers and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to produce designs from concept to production-ready artwork.
  • Plan, organize, and implement art production work for exhibition-related graphic elements, and design graphic layouts for exhibit projects, building signage, and public program support materials.
  • Print and produce exhibition graphic components, and use graphic design production support equipment such as printers, plotters, laminators, vinyl cutters, hand tools and other tools and machinery.

Conditions of Employment: The work is sedentary, though some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items takes place on a daily basis. When the incumbent participates in exhibition installations, long periods of standing, moving about, and lifting of objects may be required. Comfort with heights will be necessary as some installation procedures frequently require working from ladders and/or mechanized lifts. During exhibition installations or while in a production area, the work may involve moderate risks and discomforts that require the incumbent to use extra safety precautions or accommodations applicable to the situation.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as designing, laying out and producing printed exhibition materials in a museum setting or other cultural institution.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related, in commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above.  The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Skill in using industry standard graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to edit images, typeset copy and design exhibit support graphics and printed materials.
  2. Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of graphic design and visual communications as they relate to museum exhibition design and the visual arts.
  3. Knowledge of a wide variety of graphic production materials and processes used in exhibition graphics and print production, including computer graphic design, print production, vinyl and dimensional lettering production, graphics installation, offset and quick print lithography, paper stocks and binding.
