You will elect at the time of your application to participate in either a law enforcement or non-law enforcement internship.

Law Enforcement Internship: Designed for students who are interested in a career in law enforcement, you will be assigned a mentor from one of the FLETC training divisions. Half of your time will be spent auditing basic or advanced training programs. The remaining half of your time will be spent working on meaningful training-related research and writing projects under the guidance of your mentor.

Non-Law Enforcement Internship: Designed for students who have a desire to work in the public sector. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will receive on-the-job experience in a professional work environment focused on the FLETC's business fields. In addition, you will receive opportunities to audit the FLETC's numerous basic or advanced training programs.

General Requirements:

  1. U.S. Citizenship.
  2. Remain enrolled with your academic institution during the course of the internship period; and
  3. Have a declared major in at least one of the following: Criminal Justice, Criminology, Business, Information Technology, or Social Science-related fields of study.

Background Investigation: To ensure the accomplishment of our mission, DHS requires every student to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully pass a background investigation as a condition of placement into this internship. This will include a credit check after a tentative offer is given, a review of financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Continued employment is contingent upon favorable adjudication of periodic reinvestigations.

College Intern Program (CIP) is a 12-week program hosted by FLETC that is open to U.S. citizens who are either undergraduate student's with at least 90 semester hours (135 quarter hours) or graduate students. CIP participants are unpaid and do not receive a stipend or per diem.

  • Participants are solely responsible for any and all travel arrangements and expenses.
  • Participants expend half of their time auditing the training courses at their respective location, while the remaining half of their time is used to support their assigned branch, division, or directorate in furthering mission goals.
  • Housing and meals are provided to participants selected for the Artesia, New Mexico; Charleston, South Carolina; and Glynco, Georgia, locations only.
  • Participants may be selected for the Washington, DC and Cheltenham, Maryland locations, but will be responsible for their own housing and meals for those specific locations. 
  • College credit(s) may be granted to the participant by their academic institution once they successfully complete the program.

Applicants from Tribally Controlled Colleges (TCUs); Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs); Historically Black College and University (HBCUs) highly encouraged to apply.

You must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship.

This internship does NOT offer conversion to permanent employment.

You will be required to complete the FLETC Student Volunteer Service Agreement and DHS Form 1000-6 Non-Disclosure Agreement if you are selected.

FLETC reserves the right to discontinue the College Intern Program (CIP) at any time for any reason.

  • The depth of the nomination letter from an academic official. Does the letter show a high level of personal knowledge of the student? Is the student doing well academically? If not, are there mitigating circumstances such as personal hardship? Would the student be an asset to the FLETC in accomplishing its mission? If so, how? How well your major and overall course of study aligns with the FLETC’s mission.
