Duties

Help
  • You will perform chemical and physical analysis on a diverse range of materials.
  • You will perform analysis using traditional gravimetric, colorimetric, and other "wet" laboratory techniques and a variety of laboratory instruments.
  • You will operate, calibrate and maintain complex analytical instruments.
  • You will document and correct chemical, spectral, environmental and matrix interferences.
  • You will determine the appropriate established procedure to use for routine sample analysis.
  • You will prepare and utilize control charts to evaluate acceptability of quality control indicators.
  • You will perform data analysis and reduction to convert instrument response into reportable parameters using complex calculations.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You may be required to lift and/or carry items up to 50 pounds.
  • You may be required to perform work in confined spaces.
  • You may be required to perform work at unusual heights.
  • You may be required to maintain radiation or contamination worker qualifications.

Qualifications

GS-07:
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: As a professional Chemist calibrating and using laboratory equipment under supervision for chemical analysis of materials for environmental compliance, safety assessments, or other purposes.

GS-09:
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: As a professional Chemist performing chemical and physical analysis of materials in a laboratory under limited supervision for environmental compliance, safety assessments, or other purposes.

Education

Basic Requirements
Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Successful completion of a bachelor's degree or higher in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
Combination of education and experience - course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education:
GS-7: 1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement.
GS-9: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
OR
Combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience.
