Duties

Help
  • Support the Army, the Academy, and the Department by production of original scholarship.
  • Experience with quantitative methods or historical geography.
  • Conduct archival research, which will require creation, execution, and reconciliation of travel orders and vouchers in the Defense Travel System.
  • Teach a regional World History, American History Survey, and History of US Army.
  • Teaching responsibilities may include an upper-level elective or an advanced undergraduate seminar in the candidate's area(s) of specialty or an upper-level elective in race/gender/ identity.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to department faculty and assist in course planning.
  • Represent West Point and the Department of History through community outreach.
  • Assist with Diversity and Inclusion Studies Minor curricular and event planning.
  • The selectee may also contribute to the West Point Black History Project and/or to the Department of Defense on relevant research initiative.
  • Assist with the administration of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, including facilitation of collaborations with historically Black colleges and universities.
  • Maintain the center's public-facing webpage, as well as production, editing of social media posts, semi-annual newsletters, stewardship reports, and other Center publications.
  • Support the personal growth and development of cadets in and out of the classroom as a role model and mentor for future leaders of the Army and Nation.
  • Represent West Point and the Department of History through community outreach.
  • Interface with different agencies within the Academy, including the Academic Research Division and the Association of Graduates to pursue additional research funding.
  • Participate in appropriate academic conferences or by delivering guest lectures.
  • Assist with budgeting, planning, and execution of events and activities.
  • Oversee and assist with academic year trips, summer internships, foreign travel, along with visiting lecturers and VIPs.

This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 13 months. Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement, dental and vision. You will be eligible to earn annual leave and sick leave.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic accomplishment (Ph.D. in History or closely related field to include demonstrated accomplishment in the study of Race, Gender, Extremism and Identity preferred.) 2) Ability to teach Introductory Survey in American/Regional World and US Army History or courses in Race and/or Gender. 3) Experience and commitment to student-centered and active-learning instruction. 4) Scholarly successes to including writing and communication ability. 5) Ability to contribute to a Holocaust/Genocide/Human Rights Studies Center to include assistance with academic administration."
