Duties

Help
  • Responsible for the web page layout, design and copy editing of Stars and Stripes publications and content online.
  • Writes accurate, complete and interesting headlines, captions, teasers and photo cutlines.
  • Ensures that material is clearly presented and appropriate for the level of audience, and that conclusions are valid and supported. Produces web pages in a timely manner to ensure website is constantly updated with breaking news, updates and changes.
  • Copy edits articles and writes headlines and cutlines applying rules contained in the Associated Press (AP) and Stars and Stripes style guides. Ensures compliance with copyright, Privacy Act, and all other applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Ensures all assigned publications conform to or exceed the editorial standards and requirements specified in Stars and Stripes guidance.

  • Meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position.
  • A one year probationary period may be required.
  • Completed and signed DA Form 3433 is required prior to entrance on duty.
  • Subject to satisfactory completion of all pre-employment checks in accordance with AR 215-3, para.2 to include a Tier 1 background investigation.
  • In consideration of COVID-19, personnel within this area may wear personal protective equipment (cloth face coverings, latex gloves, and face shields) while performing their regular duties

Qualifications

Possess three years of specialized work experience with a commercial news organization directly related to the duties described above. Demonstrated work experience must include 1 year equivalent in complexity and difficulty to the next lower pay band level.

Preferred: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree and related work experience as described above, OR specialized education or training in web-based, multimedia journalism. Specialized skills related to web design, development and enhancement, such as video or audio editing and HTML coding.

In addition all applicants must possess all of the following:
1. Knowledge and documented skill in grammar, writing, and editing.
2. Experience in producing/editing content for a multimedia organization.
3. Comprehensive oral and written communication skills.
4. Ability to use computers with standard software packages and desktop publishing.
5. Comprehensive knowledge of publishing concepts, practices and technologies.
6. Demonstrated knowledge of writing for the web.
7. Knowledge/skill in taking and transmitting publishable photographs and videos.
