About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Surgery, General Surgery Service at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) with the Defense Health Agency, Indo-Pacific Market.

The incumbent of this position serves as a Nursing Assistant providing specialized nursing care and treatment to patients of all ages whose conditions can vary widely from those requiring normal nursing care to those requiring close observation.

Duties

Help
  • Receives and interviews patients; and obtains and records vital signs using stethoscope, electronic blood pressure and temperature device; records height, weight and patient's primary complaint.
  • Sets up and maintains a variety of specialized equipment and instruments (ie bladder irrigation, wound Vacs,Compression Hose , biopsies, proctoscopies, IV pytiograms, etc).
  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment by obtaining correct supplies and instruments, positioning and draping patient, prepping the site as needed.
  • Chaperones physicians during patient examinations and assists with a variety of procedures.
  • Performs clean and sterile dressing changes, irrigates wounds, packs open wounds and burns under the direction of the physician, and Registered Nurse.
  • Provides instructions and directions to patients for surgical pre-op and surgical sites, and in the care of wounds, under the direction of a RN.
  • Motivates patients to accept the illness, providing patient instructions as directed by unit standard operating procedures and performs patients treatment procedures within established guidelines.

  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter.
  • Designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
  • Requires Basic Cardiac Life Support training certification; and ability to initiate/participate in resuscitative efforts and other emergency measures.
  • Requires incumbent to obtain and maintain Certified Nursing Assistant License.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons. This position requires the incumbent to obtain Hepatitis B Immunization.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • Requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Providing personal nursing care (i.e. taking and recording patient vitals, dressing changes, bathing, oral care, prepping and cleaning rooms); Assisting physicians with minor procedures; and Performing administrative duties. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: Successful completion of at least a full four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education in excess of 60 hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify
