SUMMARY CONTINUED:

This position has a SEASONAL, full-time work schedule. The incumbent's services will be required primarily during the research field season starting in February and ending in September or October of each year. At the end of the work period, the incumbent will be placed in a non-work, non-pay status. It is expected that the incumbent will work at least 6 months per year, but no more than 50 weeks or 25 pay periods on a full-time basis.

As a Research Geophysicist within the Volcano Science Center (VSC), at the California Volcano Observatory (CalVO), you will work for the USGS-USAID Volcano Disaster Assistance Program (VDAP) and some of your specific duties will include:

  • Responsible for developing and testing new techniques for measuring and analyzing ground movements, developing models of the form and state of subsurface volcanic and tectonic structures, and evaluating the implications for volcanic hazards.
  • Develops mathematical models to process and interpret deformation data, and continuous and temporal gravity changes to address the problem of pressure changes and mass flux within volcanic systems.
  • Develops and verifies modeling software that can be used by the USGS and VDAP partner institutions (volcano observatories and monitoring agencies) to interpret observed patterns of ground deformation and gravity changes.
  • Provides training and mentoring for partners from international volcano observatories.
  • Undertakes research in volcano geodesy and publishes results in leading international science journals.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
This position will be required to perform field work. This requires hiking in various terrains and weather conditions while carrying up to 20 pounds of equipment.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-14:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include serving as a senior expert involved in geophysical investigations for which technical problem definitions, methods and/or data were highly incomplete, controversial, or uncertain and whose evaluations and recommendations were accepted by others as those of a technical expert. At this level, Geophysicists typically represent an authoritative source of consultation for other scientists and program specialists, are called upon to resolve issues that significantly affect the organization's programs, make long range and controversial proposals and defend their findings and recommendations in public or high level forums.
