Summary

ARS Postdoctoral Research Associates are hired to supplement a lead scientist's research on agricultural problems of high national priority affecting American agriculture.

This position is located in the Meat Safety & Quality Research Unit.

Duties

Help
  • Conducts research to identify and validate novel biomarkers for meat quality attributes by integrating data from genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic experiments.
  • Interacts with a multi-disciplinary team tasked with developing knowledge of the biochemical basis of meat quality attributes, including tenderness, lean color stability, and flavor.
  • Laboratory approaches will include measurement of meat color and tenderness, enzyme assays, electrophoresis, PCR and LC/MS analysis.
  • Data collection will occur in laboratory and commercial environments.
  • Collaborates with meat scientists, geneticists, and biologists to interpret data and report findings.

Qualifications

This position requires a recent Ph.D in Meat Science, Animal Science, Food Science, Muscle Biology, Molecular Biology, Statistics, or a related field of study that has equipped the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Previous experience with transcriptomic, proteomic, or metabolomic data collection and analysis is desirable.

Applicants must meet basic Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standard's requirements of the scientific discipline necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Food Technology Series 1382

Degree: food technology, or dairy technology, microbiology, biology, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline or field of biological or physical science. The course work must have been comprised of at least 30 semester hours in the basic biological and physical sciences, and included at least 20 semester hours in food technology and closely related subjects, or 20 semester hours in subjects that can be applied directly to food technology.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major, including the course work specified, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
