The Senior Technologist Aerospace Power Systems Development:

  • Advises the Chief, Power Division/Director, Research and Engineering in the area of power system development.
  • Provides technical leadership of the Center's power system technical resources in the research, design, development, test, and evaluation of aerospace power system programs.
  • Serves as the senior technical expert in aerospace power supporting aerospace research and development and flight system programs across the Agency.
  • Provides technical and thought leadership of the Center's aerospace power technical activities in research and development, design, test, and evaluation of advanced aerospace power systems.
  • Responsible for establishing and leading teams consisting of the Agency's best experts in aerospace power, augmented by industry, national laboratories, academia, and Department of Defense experts, as required, in the development of aerospace power systems.
  • Provides senior technical oversight, guidance, and direction in the research, development, and demonstration of advanced power systems and components by inter-agency civil servant and contractor teams to ensure a pipeline of new technology concept development, technical excellence, and mission readiness for ground and flight demonstrations to meet the needs of multiple NASA missions in aeronautics, space exploration, and science.
  • Provides expert technical leadership in aerospace power systems for power levels ranging from few hundred watts to megawatts with multiple power sources that might include solar arrays, electrochemical energy conversion, and nuclear power.
  • Serve as agency expert in advanced aerospace power systems that includes: energy conversion and storage; electrical components; power management and distribution; energy optimization; and modeling and simulation of complex aerospace power systems. Also has excellent working knowledge of power system architectures, system level integration, and testing and validation.
  • Provides expert technical guidance for parts and component selection, derating, radiation electromagnetic compatibility and interference, manufacturability, packaging, testing protocols, and component design using integrated discipline tools.
  • Publishes results of his/her work, gives invited lectures at national and international forums, serves as a mentor and resource to other researchers in the field, and participates on Agency and national level committees.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess expert knowledge and at least 3 years of directly related specialized experience in aerospace power systems development such as energy conversion and storage, electrical components, power management and distribution, integrated power systems and architectures, energy optimization, and modeling and simulation of complex aerospace power systems. At least 1 year of this experience must have been in planning and executing difficult programs of national significance or planning and executing specialized programs that show outstanding attainments in the field of research or consultation. At least 1 year of the directly related specialized experience must be at least equivalent to experience at the GS-15 level.

Education
