Help

The Museum Curator (Aeronautics) will:

  • Conduct independent technical research on the social and cultural history of aviation resulting in publications.
  • Serve as a curator to include managing and interpreting artifacts associated with the social and cultural history of aviation.
  • Develop exhibits, especially as related to the social and cultural history of aviation.
  • Prepare technical reports in writing as well as oral presentations to the staff and public on the Museum and its collection.
  • Foster relationships across the organization to enhance attention to the social and cultural history of aviation.

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09 it must include:

  • Experience researching the social and cultural history of aviation.


To qualify for the GS-11 on Education alone, you must have:

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
You can also qualify based on a combination of higher level graduate education and experience. This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application.

To qualify for the GS-12 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:

  • Experience collecting and delivering research on the social and cultural history of aviation.  

You cannot qualify on education at the GS-12 level; you must have experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Ability to perform historical research and present conference papers.
  • Knowledge of museum standards related to collections management practices applied to an artifact collection.  
  • Knowledge of the development of public exhibits related to the social and cultural history of aviation.
  • Ability to communicate orally in a variety of settings (e.g., community and public forums) as a historian.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing in order to prepare email, correspondence, exhibit scripts, proposals, plans, reports, books, reviews, documents, and publications to include writing succinct informational style and synthesizing and interpreting ideas clearly.

Education

A. Degree: museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field.

or

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

or

C. Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study as shown in A above.

  • This position is not included in the bargaining unit.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
