Duties

Help
  • Respond as a member of a firefighting crew to all types of fires and other emergencies.
  • Determine the proper pressure and number of lines required to fight the fire effectively.
  • Utilize knowledge of interior structure and contents to properly ventilate buildings.
  • Perform hazard assessment techniques to complete initial incident analysis when arriving on scene.
  • Communicate with the receiving facility to provide patient status information.
  • Provide treatment according to established procedures and Basic Life Support protocols.
  • Use established emergency medical techniques and equipment to stabilize patient prior to transport.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 100 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • his position requires the employee to wear uniform and/or protective clothing weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires you to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) to include weekends and holidays and may be subject to recall after normal tour of duty in cases of emergencies.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 15% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working as a fully trained member of a firefighting crew engaged in the protection of life and property. Respond to fires using firefighting and rescue techniques, equipment and extinguishing agents utilizing trained knowledge of firefighter theory and tools; contaminated and/or hazardous areas requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks to include: building ventilation, fire extinguishing, emergency medical service(s) (EMS) apparatus operation, protective performance techniques as needed in the event to protect life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Maximum Entry Age: (a) For initial appointments, you cannot have reached your 37th birthday by the day of appointment. (b) If you have passed the designated entry age limit noted, but have previously served in a covered position you may be eligible to re-enter the fire service provided that you: 1) meet all applicable qualifications for the position; and 2) will be able to complete a total of 20 years of covered and creditable federal firefighter service by the time the federal firefighter reaches the age of 57. Prior service in covered positions and credit towards retirement may be subtracted from your age to determine if the federal firefighter meets the maximum entry age.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

  • This position requires that the incumbent possess the Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications issued by one of the following: Department of Defense (DOD) Firefighter certification, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or National Professional Qualification System (NPQS)/ProBoard.
  • This position requires that you possess the Airport Firefighter and Driver/Operator Pumper certification issued by one of the following: DOD, IFSAC or NPQS/ProBoard OR be able to obtain the Airport Firefighter and Driver/Operator Pumper certification within one year of start date.
