DUTIES:
The USGS Cloud Hosting Solutions program is dedicated to advancing the USGS mission by developing and supporting cloud technologies via the public cloud. Services supported include high performance computing, high throughput computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analysis and visualization, the internet of things, etc. This position provides development operations (DevOps) and operations and maintenance (O&M) support for the Cloud Hosting Solutions' virtual data center and service offerings.

As an IT Specialist (APPSW/SYSADMIN) within the Office of the Associate Chief Information Officer, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Performs general operations and maintenance (O&M) and development operations (DevOps) activities for the USGS Cloud Hosting Solutions Platform Operations team.
  • Contributes to production releases. Monitors and troubleshoots infrastructure and services.
  • Provides customer support for cloud-based services provided by the USGS Cloud Hosting Solutions program.
  • Creates Python, Bash, and/or PowerShell scripts.
  • Writes and maintains associated technical documentation..

QUALIFICATIONS

Individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

  1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

For GS-07:In addition to the competencies described above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level: Possess one year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.

**OR Possess one year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service that demonstrates performance of tasks such as: (1) Application of IT system principles, methods, and practices sufficient to perform routine cloud-based systems administrations assignments; (2) Use of programming language such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash to modify scripts and automate processes. For the examples listed above, the level of work typically would have involved receiving clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use.

For GS-09:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.

OR Possess one year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service that demonstrates knowledge of computer requirements and techniques in carrying out project assignments consisting of several related tasks, such as typically is the case in development of minor modifications to parts of a system on the basis of detailed specifications provided. To be creditable, assignments must have involved completion of the following, or the equivalent: (1) Application of IT system principles, methods, and practices sufficient to perform a variety of cloud-based systems administration assignments; (2) Use of a programming language such as Python, PowerShell, or Bash to modify scripts and automate processes. This level of work typically would have been performed following established methods and procedures or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying methods and analytical techniques and would have required a good general working knowledge of IT systems administration methods and principles.
